Anheuser-Busch Coastal Research Center Research Experiences for High School Students

The Anheuser-Busch Coastal Research Center offers a summer research experience for high school students in the local community.  Student interns work one-on-one with ABCRC staff and graduate students from U.Va. to conduct field research projects in the environmental sciences at the field research station in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore.

Blandy Experimental Farm Education and Public Outreach programs

Blandy conducts on-site school programs for grades pre-K through 12, nature-based day camps for  elementary and middle school students, and a wide variety of public programs for families.  All take place on the grounds of the Blandy Experimental Farm and State Arboretum, an active field research station in Clarke County at the northern end of the Shenandoah Valley.

BLAST: Building Leaders for Advancing Science and Technology

BLAST is a dynamic 3-day residential summer experience at UVA.  The Virginia Space Grant Consortium in partnership with UVA and the Commonwealth of Virginia will offer this free experience to rising 9th and 10th grade students from Southwest Virginia, Southside, and the Greater Richmond and Greater Charlottesville areas.

Chemistry L.E.A.D.

Chemistry L.E.A.D. at UVA is designed to promote science education and chemistry awareness in our local community. Graduate students from the Department of Chemistry perform demonstrations and lead activities for Charlottesville-area elementary school students in accordance with the Science Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools.

Dark Skies, Bright Kids

DSBK is an entirely volunteer-run program out of the U.Va. Astronomy Department with the core mission of enhancing science education for elementary school students targeted at underserved schools in rural Virginia. The program seeks to foster the natural curiosity of children by helping them to explore the Universe in a social setting with fun, hands-on activities.  The backbone of the DSBK program is the two-month Astronomy Club that is held at a different elementary school each semester.  In addition, DSBK carries out a variety of activities, including special astronomy days featuring their portable planetarium, family observing nights, regional star parties, and participation at community-based events.

HooS-STER: High School Science, Technology, and Engineering Research Internships

U.Va. launched a high school research internship program in summer 2013, and the program will return for summer 2014.  Rising 12th graders from the local community are invited to apply.  The high school interns will conduct research in an active science or engineering lab on Grounds.

Optical Society of America, U.Va. Student Chapter

OSA@UVA is an interdepartmental group open to anyone with an interest in optics or optics research. We primarily target events at our members and the larger optics research community at UVA.  We are interested in providing optics demos at schools targeted at younger kids to spark interest in science.

U.Va. Math Ambassadors

The Math Ambassadors visit local classrooms to lead activities and experiences that engage youth in fun applications of mathematics and excite them about the field of mathematics in general.
