Academic Freedom Committee
The Committee on Academic Freedom and Professional Ethics (six elected members and three members appointed by the Steering Committee) will have multiple responsibilities, including to: 1) be an institutional repository of information about academic freedom and professional ethics, building knowledge and benchmarking UVA policies and practices in this domain; 2) periodically hold convenings with faculty and department chairs to discuss relevant developments, and answer questions; 3) review and refine recommendations for Arts & Sciences processes to address complaints about faculty conduct pertaining to academic freedom and professional ethics; and 4) serve as a resource to the Dean concerning such complaints. The Committee will not consider conduct that is covered under other existing policies and procedures, such as those governing research integrity, respect, and discriminatory harassment.
