Next fall, 20 first-year students enrolled in the College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences will have the opportunity to study at Fudan University in Shanghai. The new UVA Shanghai First program will be led by Prof. Mark Thomas, a Corcoran Department of History faculty member. Students in the program will take three classes taught by Fudan faculty, in English. They will have the option of taking Chinese as one of those three Fudan classes for world language credit at UVA. As part of the new undergraduate curriculum being piloted in the College this year, UVA Shanghai First students also will take two Engagements courses taught by Prof. Thomas as well as an ENWR course taught by a UVA graduate student instructor.

The program also includes an exchange component, with 12 Fudan University students studying at UVA in the fall of 2019.

The approval of UVA Shanghai First was accompanied by a faculty vote to continue the UVA London First program that debuted this semester at Regent’s University London. Directed by Michael Levenson, William B. Christian Professor of English, the program will accept applications for a cohort of 24 incoming first-year students for next fall.
